INVOCATION

The Lord says, 'I am the Lord your God, consecrate yourselves and be Holy because I am Holy'.

Hymn 34: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God almighty.

tune: Nicaea, with intro.

1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

2. Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
who wast, and art, and evermore shalt be.

3. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in power, in love and purity.

4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name In earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

PRAYER

Loving gracious majestic Lord we acknowledge the privilege by which we are able to come into your most Holy presence available to us by the sacrifice of your beloved son the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary. Forgive us for those times when we have failed to fully appreciate and value the blessing that free access into the Holy of Holies offers to each and everyone and give us grace to take full advantage of your availability to us. Help us to recognise afresh the love and concern you have for us as individuals and in our corporate lives together.

As we fulfil our desire to be with our friends and church family it is an even greater wish that we should be blessed, enriched and encouraged because we have met with you. To this end we offer worship, praise and adoration with a deep sense of gratitude that we know you as our heavenly father and that you are always willing to meet and share with us at any time and in any place. Forgive us for the occasions when we have taken your love for granted and neglected to give thanks when our prayers have been answered and by your grace give to us wisdom and discernment that will enable us to recognise your abiding presence as we seek to live our lives in accordance with your will.

We recognise your greatness and your glory and yet our words seem to be inadequate to express the wonder of your love but we are grateful that you are able to see beyond our words into the depths of our hearts. Sometimes such knowledge does disturb us that you see us as we really are but the fact that you continue to love and bless us is an encouragement in our walk with you and we give thanks for your gracious dealings with us.

Father we confess that we find your Holy and perfect ways quite challenging in our discipleship and despite our best intentions so often fall well below the standards that you desire us to aspire to. Forgive us we pray for those times when we have dwelt too long on impure and unhealthy thoughts, when we have been prompted by your Holy Spirit to speak out against injustice but fearing what people might think or say about us have chosen to remain silent. Forgive us also for those occasions when we have been far too quick to speak out when it would have been better to hold our counsel or spoken with greater sensitivity. Lord we are so much aware that good as we like to think ourselves to be we are an imperfect people in constant need of your grace and forgiveness that you freely offer to us.

We know that you are faithful and in our redemption we commit this act of worship into your hands asking that all we say and do will be led by your Holy Spirit and that we will leave this place renewed and strengthened to bear witness to our faith in the days that lay ahead and as the opportunities present themselves. Help us to be Holy as you are Holy in Jesus name. Amen.

The Lord's Prayer.

OUR FATHER, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory For ever and ever Amen

READING : 1 Peter 2: 1 - 12

2 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
The Living Stone and a Chosen People.

4 As you come to him, the living Stone-rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him- 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says:

"See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame."
7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,
"The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,"
8 and, "A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall."

They stumble because they disobey the message-which is also what they were destined for.

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Living Godly Lives in a Pagan Society

11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Hymn 663: Love divine all loves excelling

tune: Hyfrydol, with intro.

1. Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of heaven to earth come down,
Fix in us thy humble dwelling,
All thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesu, thou art all compassion
Pure, unbounded love thou art;
Visit us with thy salvation,
Enter every trembling heart.

2. Come, almighty to deliver,
Let us all thy life receive;
Suddenly return, and never,
Never more thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
Serve thee as thy hosts above,
Pray, and praise thee, without ceasing,
Glory in thy perfect love.

3. Finish then thy new creation,
Pure and spotless let us be;
Let us see thy great salvation,
Perfectly restored in thee:
Changed from glory into glory,
Till in heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before thee,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise!

Charles Wesley (1707-1788)

SERMON

I have to confess that during my lifetime there have been few people who have crossed my path that I would refer to as holy. That is people who had an aura about them that suggested that they were different from the run of the mill day-to-day kind of person that I normally meet. I don't know if that is the same for you but if it is, considering that we probably meet mainly in Christian circles, it would seem that there has to be something wrong.

I have been in churches and buildings where there is a sense of awe and wonder but not generally through meeting with people. There are lots of lovely people about and it is a privilege to know many and to count them as friends but is being lovely all that God expects of us. From our reading in 1 Peter it would seem to suggest that God has an expectation of much, much more, He wants us to be a holy people, holy in the same way as He is holy but what does that actually mean. The dictionary defines the word holy as being morally and spiritually excellent, belonging to or devoted to God, consecrated and sacred. I wish that were me but if I am honest, I don't believe it really is. I have recently been reading a book by David Wilkerson, an American evangelist who many years ago wrote a very popular Christian book called, The Cross and the Switchblade. It recorded some of his experiences of working alongside a number of violent American gangs of young people and the significant successes of transformed lives by introducing them to Jesus. In his latest book he challenges the complacency of modern day Churches and Christians who want to experience and practice Christianity on their own terms rather than Gods.

In Romans chapter 12 verse 2, Paul tells us not to be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Far too often the Church, which includes us, is ready to compromise on standards and values in order to be seen as loving and caring without causing offence when all it does is to make people think that the Church has nothing to offer than they already have in their own lives. We do God a great disservice when we fail to be the holy people that He wants us to be. Holiness and holy living should set us apart from the crowd which far too often our conversation and our actions fail to do. We wonder why our Churches are in decline and why people do not listen to what we have to tell them about Jesus when all the time we are authors of our own downfall. Sadly we deceive ourselves when we sink into a comfortable Christianity which makes few demands upon us and allows us to believe that whatever our age and status we have no accountability to God and no responsibility to others. The sacrifice that Christ made on the cross gives some indication that there is a price to be paid if we are to follow in His footsteps.

The early disciples found out very quickly that there was going to be a very bumpy road ahead. There are many saints who followed on and even to the present day learnt that discipleship is likely to be a costly business. Friends, family even lives can be lost because of our allegiance to Jesus. To a great extent we sit comfortably in this country but it is quite possible that in days to come this will not be the case. There are already signs that in failing to comply with the falling standards of society there will be persecution. Holding opinions that differ from others will bring accusations against you and a denial of your right to free speech.

In John chapter 17 there is what is commonly referred to as the High Priestly prayer when Jesus prays firstly for himself but then for His followers. His prayer acknowledges that we have to live in the world, difficult and complicated that it may sometimes be but that we would not be of the world. He wants us to hold on to His standards and values and not to compromise in order to accommodate the ways of a fallen people. That is never going to be easy but we can find strength and comfort in the knowledge that our loving Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ has prayed for our protection. Now I fully realise that some of these things are not easy to digest but we are not doing justice to God or others by delivering platitudes that do not reflect the reality of the challenges that being a Christian actually bring.

Holiness and holy living can cause offence and lead to isolation but it is not an optional extra that we are allowed to choose or not to choose in our walk with Jesus. Even in biblical times there were many people who found the challenge of discipleship far too much so they walked away. We may find that the very same thing could happen today with people coming to Church, singing lovely hymns, sharing wonderful fellowship and just finding it so nice to be there. The problem comes with a doctrine that teaches that we are all sinners, when there is an expectation for personal devotions which entail reading the Bible and praying. Are we really expected to share our faith with others when the opportunity presents itself and as for living holy lives, surely that is a step too far?

Fortunately or unfortunately for some, God does not lower His standards just to accommodate what people think should be acceptable but He constantly keeps them in order to lift us to that higher plane of holiness and holy living. He wants us to stand out against the crowd and as Christians we have to live with that. It may and probably will mean that we have to strive for improvement if for no other reason than we want to please God. Of course it is challenging and demanding but it is the road we have chosen to follow if and when we committed our lives to Him. Too often the Church has made it sound far too easy to become a Christian without making it abundantly clear that it includes a call to take up our cross daily. There are more than sufficient blessings in living the Christian life and securing a heavenly destination but they come with discipline and responsibility which are not quite as easy to cope with. I suppose holiness comes with the perfect love outlined in 1 Corinthians 13 and the fruit of the Spirit reflected by Paul in his letter to the Galatians. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control which are all characteristics of holy living but sadly are not always seen in the people of God. We have such a long way to go.

In our reading we were reminded that we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood. There are no levels of importance in the family of God. From the youngest to the oldest, from the smallest to the biggest job there is equal importance and we are priests intended to be a holy people in the doing of them. The more I read the Bible the more challenged I am about the Christianity I practice and the image I project. Can I do more? How do I go about it? And I am led to believe that the answer lies wholly in Jesus. Do I really trust Him, am I sufficiently submissive to His will for me and despite however many times that I may stumble and fall am I ready to get up and try all over again. Whenever I do I am not alone because when Jesus says, 'lo, I am with you always even to the end of the age' I am inclined to believe it.
If there is just one thing that I would wish us to take from this service today, it is a desire to be holy as God expects of us. If that is your wish as indeed it is mine, maybe we should just ask the Lord to help us to achieve it. I am sure that He will and who knows what impact it might make on others who have known us as we are but will then know us as what we have become, a holy people, a royal priesthood. Amen.

PRAYER

Father we thank you for this means of grace by which we can impact upon many lives because you always hear and answer our prayers. We are conscious that you do not always work in the way that we think that you should but when we reflect on prayers of the past realise that your ways are not necessarily our ways which has often been a good thing and we ask for your help in granting us greater trust in you.

In your dealings with us Lord your generosity never ceases to amaze us and the most wonderful creation that you have entrusted to our care is evidence of your creative power. We thank you for the times and the seasons which enable the earth to flourish and for the abundance of food so provided but so often not available to all because of selfishness and greed that with those who are suffering hardship thwarts your intentions. We pray for greater generosity amongst people that matches your own with willingness to share where there is an abundance and surplus with those who are suffering hardship and depravation. We ask for a spirit of grace and compassion amongst governments and politicians with a willingness and determination to work together for the greater good. As the pandemic continues to cause great hardship we pray that surplus vaccines will quickly be redirected in order to ensure that the needs of the poorest will also be met.

Lord we are aware of international tensions arising out of a lack of trust among many nations and we pray that honesty and integrity will prevail. Terrorism never seems to be far away and we pray for greater understanding that will prevent indiscriminate actions that create tensions and the unnecessary loss of lives. We pray for your comfort for those who are grieving the loss of loved ones because of such actions and ask that diplomacy rather than violence will be used to resolve these issues. Be with those who have been driven from their homes and become migrants seeking relief from their circumstances but taken advantage of by unscrupulous predators. May they find comfort and strength in you with the perpetrators of trafficking being brought to account.

We pray for the people of Tonga who are faced with the consequences of the erupting volcano and ask that they will receive help and support to overcome the damage that has been caused. There are so many issues that are laid upon our hearts father and we find it difficult to know where to begin and end in our prayers for others but you know even before we pray those things that give us cause for concern. We do pray for politicians in our own country that they will be people of integrity and when mistakes are made to have the courage to admit their wrongdoing and accept the consequences. Lord we pray that more and more of our politicians will come to experience the reality of the risen Christ. Putting their trust in him and acting according with your will and ways and that the integrity of the political system will be secured and maintained.

We pray for each other for our homes, families, friends, our church and the ministry of the people at Elm Ridge. May your grace and blessing be with us that we will be the people you want us to be doing the things you want us to do for the extension of your kingdom and the glory of your name through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn 549: One more step along the world I go

tune: Southcote, with intro.

1. One more step along the world I go,
One more step along the world I go.
From the old things to the new
Keep me travelling along with you.
And it's from the old I travel to the new.
Keep me travelling along with you.

2. Round the corners of the world I turn,
More and more about the world I learn.
All the new things that I see
You'll be looking at along with me.
And it's from the old I travel to the new.
Keep me travelling along with you.

3. As I travel through the bad and good
Keep me travelling the way I should.
Where I see no way to go
You'll be telling me the way, I know.
And it's from the old I travel to the new.
Keep me travelling along with you.

4. Give me courage when the world is rough,
Keep me loving though the world is tough.
Leap and sing in all I do,
Keep me travelling along with you.
And it's from the old I travel to the new.
Keep me travelling along with you.

5. You are older than the world can be,
You are younger than the life in me.
Ever old and ever new,
Keep me travelling along with you.
And it's from the old I travel to the new.
Keep me travelling along with you.
